Seminarian List for 2009 - 2010Church Commission:
The Knoxville Diocesan Council of Catholic Women Church Commission is very blessed
to have as its main focus this year the celebration of the Year of the Priests.
What a gift our Holy Father has presented to us! While praying for priests and
seminarians and for vocations to the holy priesthood has always been a priority for
KDCCW, this special year offers us an extra opportunity to demonstrate our support for
all of our priests in a very unique way. There are endless possibilities to provide our
love, gratitude and encouragement to our priests and seminarians, and to pray even
more diligently for vocations to the priesthood. In particular, the Church Commission
is promoting Eucharistic Adoration and the daily recitation of the Rosary for
Priests, including prayer for seminarians and an increase of vocations to the
priesthood.
There are abundant resources available on-line to assist anyone interested in
participating in the Year of the Priest. Also, you may read below for a list of further
suggestions.
The KDCCW Church Commission continues to promote praying the Liturgy of the
Hours which is a grace and wonderful means of participating in the daily prayer of the
Church and a blessed way to support our priests each day as we join in their prayers.
Let us also renew our past KDCCW resolution commitment to pray and fast on the
first Monday of every month for peace and love and the unification and
strengthening of our membership.
God is never outdone in generosity and His faithfulness to us is unfathomable. May
we respond to God's gift of the Priesthood, which nurtures us with Sacrament, by our
deepening gratitude and prayerful thoughts, words and deeds during this blessed Year
of the Priest.
God bless you!

Smoky Mountain Deanery CCW Organization Commission Report
- from the Smoky Mt Deanery OC Chair, Marilyn Hafner
This year I intend to focus on capturing the interest of diocesan teens and young adults in KDCCW. I want young people to understand the power of organization. This is quite evident in the Catholic Church which as a world-wide institution is unparalleled in its perpetual positive impact on the human community.
This is also true of CCW, the rings of which reach out from from local to national to global communities. CCW offers Catholic women a voice that is respected and the means for effectively carrying out the mission of Jesus Christ in the world.
IF YOU ARE A YOUNG PERSON READING THIS AND YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN, SPEND SOME TIME AT THIS WEBSITE!
IF YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW TO GET INVOLVED IN YOUR DEANERY, FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME AT Lisa Tuggle.

As Family Concerns Chair I thought I would follow in the foot-steps of my wonderful predecessor, Susan Tribble and work on ways to help the family thru with suggestions of how to survive the economic crunch of today.
However, the news media is telling us that things are finally turning around, so I went to the very informative NCCW website and after reviewing the insights into family, I thought where to start? Well, at the beginning with the holy sacrament of Marriage, whether it be the newly weds or long timers like myself with 38 years under my belt. The recent economy has been very hard on families and marriages; the stress level can be overwhelming so from the website www.foryourmarriage.org [an initiative of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops], please check out the following:
Catholic Marriage (top of home page)
Caring for your Marriage (top of home page)
Grading you Marriage (Caring for your Marriage; (top of home page)
This is just the beginning of our two year term and my hopes are that we can follow the guidelines set by the NCCW and cover the areas that concern Families in today's society.

The Community Concerns Commission of the Knoxville DCCW will focus on projects and activities centering on serving the needs of our own parishioners, as well as those in our communities needing help. In these difficult economic times, we need to help those who have lost their jobs; have difficulty in feeding their families; or paying rent, heat, water, doctor, and dentist bills. We must be sensitive to those who are struggling and depressed. First, we must identify the needs we can do something about. Second, planning needs to be done as to what we can provide, for whom and when . Third, we need to have the resources available through fundraising efforts to carry out our mission. Whatever we do will have a rippling effect, and we have already learned, that we will receive much more than we ever give. May Our Lady help us, may God bless us, and may we be living proof of the values we hold. Loretta Lowden, Chairman Community Concerns Commission

Refugee - International Report
Hello,
I have been a parishioner at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Lenore City, TN
for the past 6 years. Prior to that I resided in MD and VA. I first became acquainted with
the Council of Catholic Women when I moved to VA. I soon became President of my parish
group which I held for 2 years. When I moved to TN, I joined the Women's Guild and became
Vice President, President and finally Program Coordinator. I learned a lot from the wonderful
Catholic women that provided me with help, support, guidance and inspiration during the time
I held those positions. I also served on the Pastoral Parish Council for 3 years as chair and
co chair for Social Action/Social Justice. This ministry provides help to the homeless, hungry,
victims of violence (abortion, domestic abuse, death penalty), imprisoned, immigrants, refugees,
etc. Legislation, environmental concerns and Fair Trade are significant concerns. Our parish
supports an orphanage in El Salvador and my trip to that country helped me with my decision
to be a part of the International Concerns Commission. Also, I served with the Peace-builders
of East Tennessee and helped receive and provide hospitality to the International visitors that
came in the spring. Their stories sensitized me to the continuing injustice and hardship in
developing countries.
I am a wife, mother, grandmother and part time counselor. I spend a good deal of time
in NC wth my daughter's family. My work as a counselor focuses on helping and healing
with the help of the Lord.
God Bless,
Mary Hilchey

Chaldean Catholics in Iraq
Bridge Refugee Services is located in Knoxville TN. New refugees from a number of countries continue to arrive and to need services which will ease and help their transition and adjustment. We are expecting refugees to arrive from Iraq , Burma , Moldova , VietNam and several African countries in the upcoming year. Next week we will welcome 2 from Iraq and a family of 6 from Zambia .
Help needed: Office volunteers, English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers, Cultural orientation - cooking, shopping. Empowerment - driving, women's rights, parenting skills by US laws.
Items needed: furniture, household items, used cars; cash/gift cards for food and clothing, such as WalMart, Kroger; Children’s books and dictionaries with English words. Beds and linens are needed! You might have your CCD make some simple books to share that would help a child learn English. Another idea to help newly arriving refugees - buckets containing earth friendly cleaning supplies e. g. vinegar, baking soda, wash rags, broom—everything needed to keep a home clean.
Have your CCW and/or Women's Guild throw a "shower for refugees." Consider a linen shower (used bed with sheets, blankets, pillows); a kitchen shower (basic dishes, cookware, flatware—no electric appliances), a baby shower (used crib full of basic needs of young children, a bath shower (towels, soaps, johnny mop), a dining room shower (used table & chairs, dishes, flatware, glasses, place mats)—You know what is needed, but keep it very basic as there is no room or need for frills when first arriving in a new country.

Here are two more websites that are active in helping Christians of Iraq - both are charities with 501C status.
http://www.icin.org.uk/ The ICIN helps all Iraqi Christians but the assistance of the Pope is more focused on Chaldeans/Catholics of Iraq . The ICIN website has fundraising ideas - elementary school walk, apple butter sale which help raise awareness of the needs of these desperate people.

Also an impressive newsletter regarding work inside Iraq

http://iraqichristianrelief.org/takeaction.html The Iraqi Christian Relief helps all Iraqi Christians but focuses more on the Assyrians who follow the Orthodox church.

Legislation Commission | ||
Julie Drake - Chair | ||
| Marlene Holt, Commission member | ||
The focus of the Legislation Commission is to educate affiliates and members of the
Knoxville Diocesan Council of Catholic Women in the legislative process and how to
become personally involved. This may be accomplished through seminars, workshops,
correspondence, and other means. We must always keep in mind the Church's teaching
in all matters. Members are encouraged to write letters to their newspaper editors,
participate in post card campaigns, and write personal letters to their local, state, and
national legislators. It is the responsibility of each member to become familiar with
candidates and issues. I will be sending a list of web sites that will be helpful in your
research, as well as information that I receive from various sources. Thank you for all
that you have done in the past and what you will continue doing in the future to improve
the quality of life in your communities, in your state, and in your nation.
